Do What You're Good At (Or Not)

Do What You’re Good at (or not)

My favorite art teacher once said something like, “at this stage of life I want to do what I’m good at and not worry about all the things I’m not good at.

Good advice?

“Focus on your work. Do what you're great at. Don't compare yourself to others and or waste time criticizing the lives and work of others. Do what matters most to you and make a difference doing that.”
― Germany Kent

On the other hand…

Doing what you not good at keeps you humble. Maybe some things are worth doing even if you’re not good at them but if you persist, who knows, you might get better. Or you might discover some really good workarounds.

Five things I am good at:

  • Enjoying time with my two cats
  • Creating mini-landscapes in my garden
  • Painting “Alla Prima”
  • Cooking by intuition
  • Being somewhat organized (this is arguable)

Five things I am not good at:

  • Doing math in my head
  • Keeping a journal
  • Talking on the telephone
  • Knitting, crocheting, sewing – anything requiring needle and thread
  • Opening envelopes, boxes, and containers and/or following directions

Note: This is in my "outtakes" file, an attempt at digital art. Doesn't work for me.

But, you know, this might make a good pattern for "marmoleum" flooring.
