Where, what, and how

I've been studying Vision and Art by Margaret Livingston, and Color for Painters by Al Gury. Both are fascinating, well-written, with excellent illustrations Don't miss if you are interested in exploring how color works in art in great depth and detail. Our visual perception  is wired so that the location of objects in 3-D space, the "where" is processed in a different part of the brain than the "what." This is the basis of many optical illusions and how we perceive color.

Gury's book is like taking an advanced workshop on color in painting. Through step-by-step exercises and examples, as well as paintings by artists of various styles and genres, he shows us how color can be enlisted to create beautiful and life-like landscapes and portraits
