The Northwest Corner

Solo Art Show

Opens January 7, 2023

Culinaire Room

The title of this exhibit plays tribute to Murray Morgan, whose 1962 book, The Northwest Corner: The Pacific Northwest its Past and Present, chronicles the history of our region, its people and its landscape, with vivid stories and photographic images. Morgan notes a certain attitude we have here, “a linger awareness of the isolation once imposed by the mountains to the east and the ocean to the west, a pride in the landscape.”

When I was growing up in the Northwest, we were given a lot of freedom to explore, to hike, to sail, and encouraged to help out in the garden and in the kitchen. I rode the city bus to take music lessons, the city streets and buildings passing by through the windows of the bus. I miss many of the old buildings and the Seattle of my childhood. In this spirit, my paintings reflect some of my memories of times past as well as my inspiration from the parks, gardens, seascapes, and urban settings of today.

It is my intention that this art exhibit will evoke some of your own memories and your appreciation of what it means live in the “Northwest Corner.”

Nine-Square Pattern Collages

I'm sending these 6 inch square paper quilt collages to the Grants Pass Museum of Art in Oregon for their "6 x 6 for 2023" art show and benefit, to open January 2023. The collages will be part of a group show featuring 2-D and 3-D works of art all of which are 6 inches in dimension. All proceeds will benefit the museum, which is close to the Oregon border with California.

The nine-square or "nine-patch" quilt was a favorite pattern in the 19th Century and especially during the Civil War. This pattern allowed quilters to make use of scraps of material, so it was was thrifty, and it was thought to be so easy that even a child learning how to sew could create a small quilt sampler. The pattern is versatile, as the large square can be cut into four even quarters, rotated, and combined to make new geometric designs. Some of these designs were called "disappearing nine-patch."

I like this pattern because it has a modernist look to me, and 3 by 3 array forms a good composition, reflecting the "rule of thirds."
